Sand colic more common

Living in the desert Southwest, I’ve learned a thing or two about sand colic. Sand colic isn’t limited to desert climes but is a real issue for horses grazing on sand lots as well.

Writing about sand colic has been a particular interest of mine for a few years. Diagnostic tests and treatments are limited in the field, requiring horse owners and barns to step up with environmental management.

Examining where and how your horse eats is the best way to minimize the risk of sand ingestion. This may require a multi-faceted approach and a dose of creativity from horse owners.
