Old friends dating back to junior high and recent friends in the horse and writing community know that I have a tenuous relationship with nature. Having lived in major cities for a vast majority of my adult life, adjusting to life in New Mexico with coyotes yipping and snakes hissing threw me right out of my comfort zone.

Though I enjoy trail riding alone, I keep my eye on the closest house or road to assuage my city inclinations.

Range rider, Catherine Keck came of age on the back of a horse navigating mountains, moose, and bears. Roaming the Colorado landscape alone as a range rider may not be in my quiver, but writing about this remarkable woman was last spring.
