Fennell’s Secretariat a Lexington Media Darling

Nigel Fennell’s recent project used 4,608 mini Secretariats to capture one of the greatest moments in horse racing history. Now, his incarnation of the greatest horse to race has captured the Lexington, Kentuck, local media. Lex18, the local NBC affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky, caught wind of the story of Nigel Fennell and his steel reincarnation of Secretariat. The piece, written by Nancy Cox, a popular anchor and reporter, profiled Nigel and his wife, Susie, on February 9, 2023, for Lex 18.

The Lex18 station profiled Nigel Fennell a second time on March 2nd when God’s Boy was installed at the International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park. The installation, already a fan favorite, will greet visitors to the museum for the remainder of 2023. This year is the 50th anniversary of the historic Derby win by jockey Ron Turcotte and the stallion Secretariat.

When interviewed by Lex18, Fennell said, “It’s incredibly special,” says Nigel. “Especially to be a Brit and to be here only two years, and to have your work displayed so young as an artist, it’s a true honor, and for them to see the value in my work, to have him here has been very special.”

After watching the interview, be sure to read my profile of Nigel, published in the Fall 2022 issue of The Chronicle of the Horse – Untacked.
